Unit is in good cosmetic condition and is an excellent sonic performer. The unit carries S/N AC-1173. MR-74’s are real gems of the McIntosh line. They use the RIMO IF filters, have a narrow/wide IF selector on the front panel and they sound good. And they look nice as well! This tuner arrived with the power transformer replaced. The replacement looks and works fine — but it doesn’t have a high voltage winding so the multipath indicator tube doesn’t work (no B+). I thought of adding an outboard supply, but that would be pretty clunky. I spent considerable time going through the tuner to make sure it works well and looks good. Replaced 2 x 1866, 2 x 1847 and one 1828 panel lamps. Serviced the red light diffuser inside the tuning pointer. Cleaned controls and switches. Added four feet (a past owner had glued feet on with not-very-good adhesive). Dismantled and cleaned faceplate glass and tuner dial glass. Adjusted tuning string tension for smooth operation. Replaced one filter cap in power supply. Cleaned and polished the rear panel RCA jacks. Checked sensitivity, checked and balanced the stereo separation. Swept the IF stage and adjusted discriminator for channel center. Here is how it checked out: FM distortion L&R less than 0.13%. FM Stereo separation L&R set for -33 db. The faceplate is clear and the knob flutes are all still sharp and unscratched. Please note that the analog signal strength meter sometimes’sticks’.
